Air conditioning at any price: Matthew Cox's 'How To Get AC In Prison!'

Viewers say the inmate's plan got him a cooler cell and a federal sentence on top of his state one, and several are just glad the dogs came through fine.

Why this story? The video is running at 80,262 views a day, 9.3 times its usual pace (8,591).

How To Get AC In Prison! How To Get AC In Prison!

Matthew Cox's newest short prison tale is about the simplest comfort an inmate can want: a cool cell. "How To Get AC In Prison!" went up three days ago, is closing in on 150,000 views, and is gaining faster now than it did on its first day.

The title promises a method. The comments suggest a cautionary tale. Many viewers spell out the catch as they understand it: the inmate's road to air conditioning took him into federal custody, where he still had to serve the rest of his state sentence and then picked up federal time on top. Dogs are part of the story too, and a number of commenters stop to say they are relieved the animals were all right. Others ask, half joking, whether he ever got the AC. A few conclude that, in a grim way, the plan worked.

One viewer is less interested in the scheme than in the cast. Struck by how many characters Cox seems to have met inside, they reel off a list of DC Comics names, with Mr. Freeze, fittingly, near the top.

Cox knows that world from the inside. He served 13 years in federal prison for bank fraud, and his channel grew out of the stories he collected there. The short is part of a busy run. "Tricked By Cops!", posted last weekend, is also drawing far more viewers than usual. "$100K In 3 Minutes!" passed a million views within two days, on the heels of "Prison Love Story!", which got there before it. For now, Cox's audience is following his shortest stories from the cellblock.
