Video taking off 14x its usual first day

'Watch Who You Mess With,' and corrections officers answer under Matthew Cox's short

A clip only hours old has drawn several times the usual talk for one of his shorts, much of it from people who have worked the cell blocks themselves.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 841,238 views a day, 14 times a normal first day on this channel (59,718).

Watch Who You Mess WithWatch Who You Mess With

Fifteen hours after it went up, "Watch Who You Mess With" had passed 650,000 views. A new short on Matthew Cox's channel usually ends its whole first day somewhere near 60,000.

The title is a warning, and the description says nothing more. Most of what can be learned comes from the comment section, which filled about four times faster than on a usual first day for his shorts. Going by the replies, the clip turns on a man's laugh and a remark about taking someone's head off. Viewers keep returning to that laugh and what it might be holding back.

The most interesting voices come from behind the counter. Several commenters say they have worked as corrections officers, and they trade a rule they say they learned on the job: stay firm, but stay respectful. Others share their own stories of meeting someone pleasant who turned out to have done something terrible. One line, repeated in many forms, is to be polite.

Cox, a former con man who served 13 years in federal prison for bank fraud, has spent this stretch almost entirely inside prison walls. "First Day In Prison!" from the day before was already past 900,000 views. This short now joins it, and his longer interview with a former bank teller about a $100,000 heist is drawing a steadier crowd alongside them.

  • Safety is often an illusion. It pays to be polite
  • As a CO you can get your point across without yelling and from the start you gotta keep it respectful thats how you make it through this field of work
  • And this is why you treat everyone with respect and decency, at least until they give you a reason to respond otherwise
