A dairy-loaded dessert, eaten to be polite: Romesh Ranganathan's vegan dilemma

The Would I Lie To You? short drew nearly half a million views in under a day, and its comments are as busy with a David Mitchell slip as with Romesh's pudding.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 497,362 views a day, 22 times a normal first day on this channel (22,888).

Romesh Ranganathan, a comedian whose veganism is a long-running part of his act, sits on the Would I Lie To You? panel and tells a story about a dessert. Going by the tags and the comments, he ate it so as not to offend his hosts, and it held more dairy than he had ever seen. The short is titled "WELL, that is polite," and that sums up the dilemma.

The official channel posts clips from more than a decade of the BBC panel show, and a new short there usually ends its first day with somewhere around 23,000 views. This one passed 470,000 in about 21 hours. It has already left behind the week's other shorts, Claudia Winkleman stuck in a cot and a "Classic Sara Pascoe" moment. The comment section moved even faster, with 260 comments where a usual short gathers about 14.

Much of the talk is not about Romesh at all. Viewers keep coming back to a rare fumble from David Mitchell, and some try to work out what he meant by it. Others repeat a line about changing a blanket, or wonder aloud whether the mystery pudding was a tres leches. One long comment from a viewer about her own polite-guest ordeal has turned into a thread of more than forty replies.

The Traitors also runs through the channel's week, from the Winkleman short to a compilation of James Acaster and Ed Gamble trying to fool the panel, and this short's tags lean the same way.
