Malaysia's 1993 Mazlan Idris case is the one new Disturban documentary
The four-day-old video has passed 200,000 views, and the most liked comments under it are about its intro, which viewers credit to Chris Hansen.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
She Sacrificed A Human…Then Smiled For This Photo
Disturban posted a single video over the seven days, and it travels a long way from home. "She Sacrificed A Human…Then Smiled For This Photo" goes back to one of Malaysia's most notorious criminal cases: the disappearance of the politician Mazlan Idris in 1993, the investigation that followed and a long legal process involving three defendants. As with his other work, the narrator builds it from court documents, and the description says graphic details and imagery were avoided where possible.
The video drew close to 120,000 views on its first day and has since passed 200,000. Much of the comment section is about how it opens. Many viewers say the intro comes from Chris Hansen, a surprise on a channel usually voiced by one man alone. Others write about the photograph in the title, and one viewer from Malaysia recalls how deeply the case marked the country.
The new upload has company. "She Took This Selfie And Then Was ⬜ ⬜ ⬜ ⬜ ⬜", about the 2015 disappearance of the Dutch medical student Sophia Koetsier in Uganda, is 19 days old and still drawing almost as many daily views as the new video. It has passed 1.2 million.
Overall it was a slower week than usual for the channel, at about a million views, with subscribers almost unchanged at 991,000. Among true crime and courts channels of a similar size, Matthew Cox and Mike Rafi had the big weeks, and several others, Willie D Live and Nancy Grace among them, also ran below their usual pace.
