Michael J. Fox reaches Companion, the Order of Canada's top rung, on The National
A short cut from Friday's newscast went much further than the full broadcast it came from, and its likes climbed far faster than its views.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 266,250 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (24,937).
Michael J. Fox promoted to highest Order of Canada level
A short from The National usually ends its first day with around 25,000 views. The clip of Michael J. Fox being promoted to Companion, the highest of the Order of Canada's three levels, had passed 300,000 a little more than a day after it went up.
The news itself is brief. The description calls Fox an actor and advocate who has raised billions of dollars for Parkinson's research and has spoken openly about his own experience with the disease. The Edmonton-born star of Family Ties and Back to the Future was first named to the order as an Officer in 2010, so this is a step up rather than a first honor. The short's tags also carry the names of Louise Arbour, the former Supreme Court of Canada justice, and Christine Sinclair, the longtime captain of Canada's women's soccer team.
The likes stand out even more than the views. They arrived about sixty times faster than on a usual short from the channel, a much steeper climb than the views made, and a sign that people did more than glance at it.
The segment first ran about twenty minutes into Friday's full broadcast, after a special prosecutor in the 'Cornell 7' case, the FlyDubai pilot speaking from his hospital bed and Manchester City's guilty verdict. That newscast also started well ahead of a usual first day, past 100,000 views, yet the single story pulled in nearly three times as many. It happened while the channel as a whole was running below its usual daily pace, so a three-minute clip about an honor carried much of The National's weekend.
