Video taking off 11x its usual first day

Europe's reserve diesel, released under Trump's pressure, leads Global National's Oct. 2 show

The Friday newscast also carried the FlyDubai captain's own account and Michael J. Fox's promotion in the Order of Canada, and its comments keep asking why Canada doesn't refine more of its own fuel.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 197,559 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (17,188).

Global National: Oct. 2, 2026 | Europe to release reserve oil and diesel after threats from TrumpGlobal National: Oct. 2, 2026 | Europe to release reserve oil and diesel after threats from Trump

Friday's Global National, posted in full as Global News does with its flagship newscast every day, passed 220,000 views a little more than a day after it went up. A regular video on the channel usually closes its first day somewhere near 17,000.

The top story set the tone. U.S. President Donald Trump has been pressing Europe to release its diesel reserves, and the G7 agreed to coordinate the release of 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil over four months. Jacqueline Hansen reported. A second fuel story followed close behind: Nova Scotia has become the latest province to charge electric vehicle owners an extra registration fee, a cost Heidi Petracek weighed against what those drivers save at the pump.

The rest of the half hour ranged widely. New York's governor appointed a special prosecutor days after a 2024 sexual assault case at Cornell University was reopened. Captain Smit Machchhar, recovering in hospital after being stabbed in the cockpit of a FlyDubai flight bound for Israel, became emotional as he described what happened. Eric Sorensen looked at polling that shows a shift in B.C. Premier David Eby's snap election. And Michael J. Fox was made a companion of the Order of Canada at Rideau Hall.

The comments filled about twice as fast as usual, and most of them are about fuel: whether 100 million barrels goes very far, and, again and again, why Canada leans on others to refine its oil. A smaller group writes only about Fox.

The FlyDubai story kept running on the channel on its own. As we reported here, cabin footage from the flight had already drawn a crowd, and on Saturday a separate interview with aviation expert John Gradek, on how cockpit safety equipment could become a weapon, also ran several times ahead of a usual start.

The numbers

The full newscast drew more in its first day than a regular Global News video usually does in many days, even as the channel's overall daily views ran below their usual pace.
