FlyDubai cabin footage reaches 240,000 views in twelve hours on Global News
Redmond Shannon's report on the Israel-bound flight drew more in half a day than the channel's own follow-up and its nightly newscast combined.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 343,421 views a day, 18 times a normal first day on this channel (18,790).
Video shows alleged pilot, passengers covered in blood after FlyDubai altercation
A new report on Global News usually gathers something like 19,000 views in its first day. Twelve hours after Redmond Shannon's report on the FlyDubai flight went up, it had passed 240,000.
The flight was bound for Israel when violence broke out on board about two hours in. According to the report, flight tracking data shows the aircraft dropping more than five kilometers in under two minutes before it sent an emergency alert and diverted to Saudi Arabia, where it made an emergency landing. The footage at the center of the video shows a man said to be one of the pilots, along with passengers, covered in blood. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the incident is not believed to have been a hijacking and that arrangements were being made to bring Israeli passengers home. The circumstances remain under investigation.
In the comments, much of the discussion is about the word "altercation" in the title, which many viewers argue is too mild for what happened. Others ask how a knife could have gotten on board.
Global posted a second report the next day, in which passengers describe stepping in to stop what they feared was a hijacking. It has drawn a few thousand views so far, about as many as the full Global National broadcast for September 30, which carried the same story alongside coverage of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
