Alaska natural gas and a Senate race: Trump's $54 billion plan draws AP's live viewers
The White House stream passed 83,000 views in six hours, while the Associated Press uploads around it, from the FlyDubai plumber story to Antonio Brown's court date, moved far more slowly.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 209,558 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (19,803).
LIVE: Trump announces plans for a $54 billion project in Alaska
Why frame a natural gas announcement around a Senate race? The Associated Press did exactly that in the description of its live stream. It presents President Donald Trump talking about an investment in a natural gas project in Alaska, a state where his party faces a competitive Senate contest in the midterms.
Viewers arrived quickly. Six hours after it went up, "LIVE: Trump announces plans for a $54 billion project in Alaska" had passed 83,000 views. That puts it on course for about ten times what an AP upload usually gathers in a full first day.
The pace stands out more because the rest of the channel is running quieter than normal. Two other September 30 uploads each sat around 15,000 views: Trump retelling Netanyahu's account of a plumber helping save the FlyDubai plane, and a police press conference from northern Virginia. Videos posted the next day were still in the hundreds or low thousands, among them Antonio Brown's postponed plea hearing and a quiet report from the Taoist martial arts schools of China's Wudang Mountains.
This is AP's second fast-starting Washington video in a day, after Sen. Eric Schmitt's exchange with Jack Smith, as we reported here. It also comes a few days after the agency's live Starship Flight 14 feed, so the live format is having a busy week on the channel.
The comment section is small. Most of it turns on the questions the announcement leaves open: where the money would come from, what a project of this size would mean for Alaska's wildlife, and how it fits the midterm calendar that AP's own description points to.
