Floodwater in the 'sandbox state' carries AccuWeather's New Mexico report

Hurricane Polo's moisture followed the channel west from Texas, and the New Mexicans in the comments talk as much about a dry Rio Grande as about the flooding.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 217,011 views a day, 14 times a normal first day on this channel (15,245).

Hurricane Polo did not stop at Texas, as we reported here, and AccuWeather has followed its moisture into New Mexico. "Flooding Plagues New Mexico, Albuquerque's Wettest Month" shows what tropical moisture from the storm, joined by a pair of other weather systems, has done to a state better known for drought. Roads are underwater, vehicles are stranded and people have been evacuated, and the description warns of more rounds of heavy rain through Friday.

Twelve hours after it went up, the report had close to 146,000 views. That puts it on course for about fourteen times what a new AccuWeather video usually gathers on its first day, and it is helping the whole channel run well above its normal daily pace. Nothing posted around it comes close. A shark warning from Nantucket is in the tens of thousands, and a timelapse of lightning and a wall of dust over El Paso, from the same day, is still in the low thousands.

The comment section reads like a conversation among neighbors. Several viewers write that they have never seen this much water in New Mexico. One jokes about the "sandbox state," a long way from the official nickname, the Land of Enchantment. Others write from farms and mountain towns about low reservoirs and say the state needs the water even as it floods. One farmer says he saw the Rio Grande run completely dry this year for the first time in his life. Someone living high in the mountains is relaxed about it all: if the water ever climbs that far, the Ark can come for him.

The channel is staying with the bigger picture. Its other new upload has Bernie Rayno explaining why the Eastern Pacific, where Polo formed, has had such a busy hurricane season.
