What does it take for a whole evening newscast to break out? The National's Sept. 27 broadcast, posted in full, passed a quarter of a million views barely a day after it went up. That is about ten times the first day a new upload on CBC's flagship news channel usually gets.

The episode opens with British police stopping a suspected terror plot against an airbase used by the U.S. military. The tags name RAF Fairford, the Royal Air Force station in Gloucestershire. From there it turns home, to Canadian industries bracing for a U.S. import ban on some of their goods, advance polls opening in Quebec and a dip in Danielle Smith's approval numbers.

The longest stretch goes to Kyiv. A reporter spends about ten minutes on what 24 hours look like in a city under constant Russian bombardment. The lighter end of the running order has Leylah Fernandez, the Montreal-born player who reached the 2021 U.S. Open final, winning the Singapore Open. Then comes a boy band bringing back a '90s mall tour, and a closing segment on a town crier billed as the best of them all.
