Who explains American politics to Australians? For more than a decade on the ABC, it has been the job of journalist John Barron and satirist Chas Licciardello, of The Chaser, on Planet America. Their newest episode is now the busiest new video on ABC News In-depth. It came close to 100,000 views in about a day, roughly thirteen times the pace a new upload here usually manages.
The channel is the Australian public broadcaster's home for long-form journalism and explainers, and it was already running above its normal daily pace. The episode still stood well clear of everything else.
It covers a lot of ground in half an hour. It opens with Trump's ban on major media outlets at the White House, which the hosts argue backfired. Then it turns to Saudi Arabia's war with the Houthis and what Americans are paying at the pump. Steven Cook, who directs the Middle East program at the Council on Foreign Relations, is asked why Trump is staying out of it. After that come approval ratings that the description calls historic lows, and a detour to Iowa to ask whether Democrats can win there in the midterms.
