Christa Pike's failed execution, and Nancy Grace's focus on Colleen Slemmer
The segment's title says the murdered woman was "erased from narrative," and viewers filled the comments with her name.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 443,679 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (40,957).
CHRISTA PIKE SURVIVES EXECUTION, MURDERED GIRL "ERASED FROM NARRATIVE"
Far beyond the usual pace. Six hours after it went up, Nancy Grace's segment on Christa Pike had passed 176,000 views. A new video on her channel usually draws around 41,000 in its entire first day.
The news is stark. Pike is the death row inmate convicted of murdering 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, and an attempt to execute her failed. According to the description, Pike's lawyer is now moving to throw out her death sentence. Grace's title, in her familiar capitals, carries the phrase she builds the segment around: the murdered young woman, it says, has been "erased from narrative."
That idea is what the audience took up. In those first six hours the comment section filled to more than twice a usual full first day's worth, and much of it is about Slemmer herself. Viewers write her name, say she should not be forgotten and think of her mother. Others ask why carrying out the sentence took so many years, and several bring up a recording of Pike.
The Pike segment came at the end of a busy few days on the channel. Before it, Grace had followed the sentencing of Caleb Flynn, a former pastor and American Idol contestant who received life without parole for murdering his wife, Ashley. That coverage also drew a large audience, but the Pike segment gathered views much faster.
Grace has stayed with the Pike case. The same day, the channel posted her conversation with WKRN reporter Tori Gessner, who witnessed the attempt from inside the chamber. A day later it added an interview with former Knoxville Police Chief Phil Keith about the murder that put Pike on death row.

This video had a far faster first day than a new upload on the channel usually has, and its comment section was busier still.
