Opposing magnets and a Back to the Future dream: colinfurze's floating skateboard
A clip from the end of March is busy again, and its most liked comments still quote Doc Brown and ask for a skate park test.
Why this story? The video is running at 20,038 views a day, 7 times its usual pace (2,881).
Magnetic Floating Skateboard.
What does a skateboard feel like when the deck never touches the wheels? Colin Furze tried to find out with "Magnetic Floating Skateboard.", a clip posted at the end of March. Its premise is simple: a top board rides on a cushion of opposing magnets above a second board with the wheels. In the description he calls it the feeling of floating, and he points viewers to his full video for how he built it and the other versions he tried.
For most of the spring and summer it ticked along quietly. Now it is drawing around seven times its usual daily views and has passed 3.6 million. It is not clear what set it off, and the talk under it is mostly older: the comments are not filling any faster.
That talk is worth a look anyway. The most liked reply is two words from Doc Brown, and the tags make the Back to the Future link plain. Viewers want to see it at a skate park with strangers taking turns, or bolted onto an electric longboard to feel more like Marty McFly's hoverboard. Some suggest mirrors around the bottom board so the top one seems to hover on its own. One just asks for Tony Hawk, and another notes the practical gain: no more feeling every bump in the road.
It is a lighter detour from what has filled the channel lately: a LEGO tea elevator, a vault door fix and slow, careful work on the hydraulics of his secret garage, a project he says paused partly because there is now a Mrs Furze.
