Pearson's gold heist reaches a Brampton courtroom on Crime Beat TV

Sean O'Shea covers the start of the trial over the 2023 theft at Toronto's airport, one of four court and crime reports from Global News this week.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Canada's largest gold heist, as investigators have described it, is now a trial. The accused, a man from the Greater Toronto Area, has pleaded not guilty to theft and conspiracy charges over the 2023 theft at Toronto Pearson Airport. Sean O'Shea's report from Brampton notes that prosecutors had dropped the charges against two other men in the case only a month earlier. The report went up on October 5 and is the channel's most watched upload of the week, close to 9,000 views.

The other three reports follow Global News reporters through courtrooms and police files. Marney Blunt covers the Parole Board of Canada's decision to send Shawn Lamb back to prison. Lamb pleaded guilty in 2013 to manslaughter in the deaths of Lorna Blacksmith and Carolyn Sinclair. The charge in the death of Tanya Nepinak was stayed, and her remains are believed to be in Winnipeg's Brady Road landfill. The board revoked his statutory release after finding he broke his conditions, and the report carries reaction from the women's families. Catherine McDonald covers a sentencing hearing over a fatal crash in Etobicoke. Elizabeth Zogalis reports from Montreal, where police say jewelry store robberies are at an all-time high and that minors are being recruited to carry them out.

The channel, which also carries Nancy Hixt's Crime Beat series and the archive of 16x9, held at 424,000 subscribers and ran somewhat below its usual pace. That puts it in good company. Most true crime and courts channels near its size are also running quieter than normal. Dateline NBC is holding its usual pace, and Law&Crime Investigates is one of the few running above its own.
