Noguchi, Nakashima and a rooftop garden: inside Julianne Moore's New York home

The Oscar winner's 1920s apartment, reworked with architect Oliver Freundlich, has viewers talking about her kitchen, an egg holder and her lamp guy.

Architectural Digest has walked through hundreds of famous front doors, and most first days look alike. Julianne Moore's did not. Her Open Door episode passed 600,000 views within 16 hours of going up, on a channel whose new videos usually spend a full day collecting a small fraction of that.

The home is a 1920s rooftop apartment in New York City, designed with architect Oliver Freundlich. The description lists what fills it: art, vintage furniture and collectible design, including pieces by George Nakashima, the woodworker known for live-edge tables, and Isamu Noguchi, the sculptor whose paper lamps and coffee table became modern classics. There is a working fireplace and a marble bathroom. The tour runs from the kitchen through the living area to the bathroom and bedroom, and the rooftop terrace gets its own moments.

The comments are about small things. Several viewers fix on a passing mention of her lamp guy, others on an egg holder in the kitchen. One of the most liked notes points to a plain IKEA unit standing among the collector pieces. Others single out the rooftop garden, and one viewer counts more than one terrace.

The rest of the channel has had a quieter stretch. Lucy Hale's Open Door, posted a day earlier, and its short follow-ups are moving at a gentler pace, while the Gilded Age mansion with its hidden servants' staircases, as we reported here, has kept going and is now near 200,000 views.

  • The apartment is really beautiful, but the rooftop garden is the best.

  • One of my favorites so far. You can tell she's an artist, not just a consumer.

  • feels super high-end but still so warm and full of character, that’s her magic.
  • I usually find celebrity NYC apartments to be too large, too cramped, not cozy enough, or not enough natural light. This is the first I've seen that I would love to live in. The fact there are several roof terraces too is amazing!
  • I would never leave that kitchen
  • She's managed to make this particularly cold aesthetic feel warm. Brava!
  • Stunning in its simplicity. Artfully decorated, not ostentatious, very comfortable. And windows on the City—perfection.
