A jailbroken PS5 and Sony's disc retreat fill YongYea's week

Four uploads ran from a survey Sony reportedly sent developers about physical discs to The Witcher 3's remaster and a sponsored try of Dune Awakening's new single-player mode.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

It Finally Happened...It Finally Happened...

Among the gaming news channels nearest its size, YongYea drew the third most views of the week, about 1.4 million, behind SpawnPoiint and Skill Up. Jesse Cox was close behind.

Most of it came from one running story: Sony's plan to stop making physical discs, and the pushback against it. Monday's "The Rebellion Is Getting To Them" reported that Sony had sent PlayStation developers what is described as its biggest survey yet about discs, and that the head of the studio behind Disgaea had talked about conversations with Sony over the decision. Yong reads the survey as a sign that Sony is at least a little shaken.

Two days later came "It Finally Happened...". The PS5 has been jailbroken, and the video frames it as a way for owners to back up and keep the games that a disc-free future might take away. It became the week's biggest upload, with more than 400,000 views on its first day. The comments mostly took the same joke and spun it a dozen ways: Sony wanted players to go all digital, and now they can make their own copies. Others pointed out that a jailbroken console could also play PS1, PS2 and PS3 games.

The rest of the week was lighter. "A Massive Win" covered the launch of The Witcher 3 Remastered, which the description says is breaking the game's own player records eleven years after release. On Saturday came a sponsored first look at Dune Awakening's new single-player mode. Yong admits he skipped the game while it was only an MMO. Only half a day old, it is the channel's fastest video right now.
