Hope, a Korean sci-fi film, brings back YMS's Quickie format
Adam's short, unscripted take on the film passed 110,000 views in three days, and his new look has the comments talking as much as the movie.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Quickie: Hope
Adam Johnston, the film critic behind YMS, put out one video this week, and it was a Quickie: "Quickie: Hope," a short take on the Korean science fiction film Hope. It drew close to 90,000 views on its first day and has gone past 110,000 since.
The film gives the comment section plenty to chew on. Viewers trade notes on its alien language, which many say was built by linguists and left largely unsubtitled, on its well-armed humans who shoot first, and on its budget, which some call the most expensive Korean film ever made. One theme keeps returning: this is a movie people disagree about on its own merits. Several viewers guessed Adam would like it the moment horses showed up on screen.
The other running topic is Adam himself. A new hairstyle and outfit set off a long thread of jokes, and longtime viewers note that the Quickie is back in the loose, unscripted vlog style of his early years.
The Resident Evil Quickie he made with Sarah of just2film, now twelve days old, is still drawing a steady crowd behind it. The channel is running a little above its usual daily pace. Among the movie and commentary channels nearest its size, CineSavvy had by far the biggest week, while YMS sits near the quieter end of the group, as a channel built on one carefully made opinion at a time tends to.
