The Shire, House Fossoway and Euron's teacher: In Deep Geek's three questions

A Tolkien piece on why Gandalf kept coming back to the hobbits drew the most viewers of the week, and its comments turned into a seminar on Valinor, pipe-weed and the Scouring.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Why Did Gandalf Love The Shire? Why Did Gandalf Love The Shire?

In Deep Geek passed a million subscribers some time ago and now sits just above it, still doing what its about page promises: insight and debate on Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and the rest of the fantasy shelf. Three videos went up this week, and they split neatly between Middle-earth and Westeros.

The Tolkien one drew the biggest crowd. "Why Did Gandalf Love The Shire?" opened with about 120,000 views on its first day and has since passed 186,000. Its comment section reads like a reading group. The most liked reply points out that Gandalf never rode into the Shire with the hobbits at the end, and wonders whether he simply couldn't bear to see what Saruman had done there. Others tie the Shire to Tolkien's own childhood countryside swallowed by industry, or to Olórin's old fondness for the gardens of Valinor, and one of the best-loved replies just names the hobbits' pipe-weed.

Then came Westeros. "Is Euron Bloodraven's Apprentice?" takes on one of the stranger theories around George R.R. Martin's unfinished books: whether the Crow's Eye and the three-eyed crow are linked. Thursday's "The History of House Fossoway" goes to a much smaller house, the Reach family split in two over the color of an apple, and it is the quickest starter of the three, credited to Peter Diamond-Magnoni, Mark Fairclough and Jennifer Melmore.

Overall the channel ran slower than its usual pace, with a little over two million views across the week, fourth among the movie and TV commentary channels nearest its size, where CineSavvy and azan had very big weeks. Perhaps the hobbits are still being counted: last week's "What did Bilbo do with all his Gold?" keeps drawing more each day than the Euron video.
