'Renting the worst movie ever': a Gumball clip from 'The Pony' nears three million on Venotoons

A two-week-old cut from a second-season episode is pulling far ahead of the fan channel's newer uploads, a few days after a homemade Gumball soundtrack album went up beside it.

Why this story? The video is running at 43,930 views a day, 11 times its usual pace (3,878).

Renting the worst movie everRenting the worst movie ever

Lately, "Renting the worst movie ever" had settled into a steady pace of around 4,000 views a day. On its latest day it drew more than ten times that, and the short now sits just under three million views.

The clip comes from "The Pony," the 21st episode of the second season of The Amazing World of Gumball, the Cartoon Network series created by Ben Bocquelet about a blue cat named Gumball, his goldfish brother Darwin and the strange town of Elmore. Venotoons is a fan channel, and the clip is labeled the way all its cuts are: a short title, then the episode's name and number in the description.

The climb stands out against the rest of the channel, which has been running slower than usual overall. Its other recent clips sit far lower. "Darwin drank what?!", from "The Anybody," has passed 70,000 views, and "Richard's riddle" and "Do movie trailers show too much?" are both in the thirty thousands. The trailer question and the worst rental make a fitting pair from the same week.

There is a person behind the clips, too. In late September a short thank-you video marked 400,000 subscribers and told how the channel started. Then came "The Amazing Album of Gumball," a nearly fifty-minute fan compilation of the show's songs, from "Weird Like You & Me" to "Goodbye," with homemade cover art. Its description makes the case for it: SpongeBob and Adventure Time got soundtrack albums, and Gumball's songs never had an official release.
