A million for Nicolas Cage's lottery-ticket cop, and Gran Torino keeps rolling

A 1994 romantic comedy has given 酱sir电影局 its newest million-view short, while the Clint Eastwood clip from earlier in the week drew more in its latest day than in all the days before.

Why this story? The video is running at 265,938 views a day, 16 times its usual pace (16,573).

"A sharp police officer can smell danger at a glance" has passed a million views on 酱sir电影局, a channel that cuts scenes from films and TV series into shorts. The scene comes from It Could Happen to You, Andrew Bergman's 1994 comedy. Nicolas Cage plays Charlie Lang, a New York cop who is short on change for a tip and promises a coffee-shop waitress, played by Bridget Fonda, half of his lottery ticket instead. The short went up on September 30, and the title points to his instincts on the beat rather than the jackpot.

The Gran Torino edit, "Still the old man," is still moving, as we reported here. It started slowly, with a few thousand views on its first day. In its latest day it gathered more than in all its earlier days put together, and it is now close to 400,000. The channel has since posted a second scene with Eastwood's Walt Kowalski, "The old hand shows you the way a real man talks," which has had a quieter start.

The comments read like a memory exchange. A former movie theater worker remembers finding the film slow when it opened and changing his mind years later. Another viewer describes an uncle's basement TV room where Eastwood films were the lessons in right and wrong. One couple calls it their go-to whenever nothing else is on. Several viewers talk about how the film handles Walt's prejudice.

Across the channel, daily views are running at more than twice their usual pace, and 20,000 new subscribers arrived over the week. The other recent edits come from TV dramas such as Imposters, The Resident and White Collar. Each description names its source at the top, so anyone who stops on a million-view cop scene can find the 1994 film it came from.

What viewers say

  • Grand Torino. I worked at a movie theater at 18. When this film came out. I thought it was dark, slow, and Clint was past his prime acting days. But boy was I wrong. Eventually the movie grew on me and I watched it one day for free.

  • Awesome film. Wife and I watch it at least 3 times a week. It’s our go to if nothing is on tv. Superb acting and storytelling.
