'Children Somehow Think Their Parents Are The Problem': Jim Gaffigan's family compilation

The parenting reel passed a quarter of a million views in six days, and its comment section filled with readers counting their own siblings.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Among the stand-up channels closest to his size, Jim Gaffigan sits in the middle for views gained this week, fifth of eight, with a little under 1.8 million. Gianmarco Soresi and Phil Hanley had the loud weeks; Troy Bond and Randy Feltface were the quiet ones.

Gaffigan's own week belonged to one video. "Children Somehow Think Their Parents Are The Problem" is a compilation of his family material, the subject he has mined for years as a father of five in a New York apartment, and it passed 267,000 views in six days. It drew more than every other new upload put together.

The comments read like a reunion of big families. Viewers who grew up as the fourth of five or the youngest of nine trade stories of parents who gave up on names and started using numbers, or ran through every sibling's name, and the dog's, before landing on the right one. A favorite joke from the set, about his household being big enough to earn its own country name, gets quoted back at him more than once.

Around it went three shorts: a Lent fish bit, a tour reminder and a clip for his limited bourbon line. The channel ran a little below its usual daily pace, and still added about 10,000 subscribers over the seven days, enough to keep it just past the million mark.

What viewers say

  • So relatable! I'm one of 5 kids, my Dad just numbered us after a while. I'm #4 child. "Hey, number 4 come here" 😂
  • The biggest laugh I had as a teenager and #5 of 7 kids was when my mother, upset at my younger brother, called him several family names before settling on Clyde, our dog.
