'Turning small talk into a big mistake': Drew Lynch, eye contact and Jungle Jim's

The introvert short drew nearly 300,000 views in thirteen hours, and many viewers think they recognize the Ohio grocery store behind him.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 406,372 views a day, 26 times a normal first day on this channel (15,659).

A new Drew Lynch short usually ends its first day with somewhere around 16,000 views. "Being an introvert is just turning small talk into a big mistake" passed that before most of his audience had finished breakfast, and thirteen hours in it was close to 300,000.

The title promises an introvert's take on chit-chat. From the comments, the moment people keep returning to is a question about eye contact: why we are expected to look into the eyes of the person we are talking to. Viewers have turned that into a seminar of their own. One thread wonders whether anxiety is a primate instinct pulling against evolution. Another points out that in Japan and Korea a long stare can read as rude. Several people simply admit they always suspected there was a reason they disliked it.

The other talking point is the setting. Viewer after viewer calls out Jungle Jim's, the sprawling international market outside Cincinnati, which fits a week Lynch has spent partly in Ohio. A day before this one he posted a short joking that Ohio's city names sound like the noises people make when they step on Legos.

The comment section moved quickly as well, at about nine times the pace of his usual first day. And the introvert theme runs beyond this clip. The week also brought word of a five-night run, the Wrap It Up! tour, billed as one introvert and one extrovert sharing a stage: Lynch and a comedian named Joe.
