Video taking off 11x its usual first day

Blame Gwen Stefani? Jimmy Carr's podcast short sets the comments fact-checking

A clip about how Donald Trump came to run for president drew about eleven times a usual first day for a Carr short, and its comment section filled more than twenty times faster.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 344,342 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (30,244).

Jimmy Carr's channel already draws more daily views than any of the stand-up channels nearest its size, Don't Tell Comedy and Michael Blaustein included, and on October 1 it ran a little above its own norm. One short with a question for a title did most of the work: "Wait, is it all Gwen Stefani's fault?"

Eleven hours after it went up, it had about 230,000 views, on course for roughly eleven times what a new Carr short usually gathers in its first day. The comments moved faster still. In those eleven hours they reached more than twenty times a typical short's full first day.

The clip is tagged as a podcast moment, and its one-line description promises nobody will regret watching unless they are easily offended. The title names the singer. The comment section makes the real subject clear: how Donald Trump ended up running for president. Many viewers go back to the 2011 White House Correspondents' Dinner, when Barack Obama and that night's host, Seth Meyers, joked about Trump while he sat in the room. Others note that he had talked about running long before that, pointing to a 1988 Oprah interview and his brief try in 2000. One viewer suggests that, by the clip's logic, a producer is really to blame.

The rest of Carr's day was quieter. A stand-up short about what used to annoy him in church and an 8 Out of 10 Cats clip about a spider-dog in a dark lift drew modest crowds. Even the first part of his Texas to Derby crowd-work set, posted the day before, has about half the views of the Gwen Stefani clip.
