An echidna in the rising Macquarie River gives Sassy a ten-times start
Two men waded in near Warren, New South Wales, and the clips channel's short passed three and a half million views in just over a day, while a drain-trapped snapping turtle crossed a million beside it.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 2,999,175 views a day, 10 times a normal first day on this channel (294,095).
Echidna Trapped In Rising River Gets Rescued
Sassy, the clips channel that gathers animal rescues from around the world, posted a short about an echidna stranded in the middle of the Macquarie River near Warren, in New South Wales, with the water still climbing. The description says two men made their way out into the river and brought it back to safety. That is the whole plot, and it was plenty. In its first day the clip drew around three million views, about ten times what a new Sassy short usually finds, and it kept going from there.
An echidna is an unusual animal to find in that spot. It is the spiny, ant-eating Australian mammal more at home digging into soil than riding out a flood, so perhaps the picture of one marooned in brown water was part of the pull.
The comment section moved at a gentler pace than the audience, only a little busier than on a usual first day. Nearly all of it is thanks addressed to the two rescuers. The one long conversation grew under a viewer's crash course on what an echidna actually is, and it drew more replies than anything else on the page.
The echidna arrived during a run of rescue clips for the channel. The fence-bound coyote, as we reported here, has since passed nine million views. A man pulling a large snapping turtle out of a flooded pond's overflow pipe crossed a million, and two brothers cutting fishing line from a shark's head at Crash Boat Beach in Puerto Rico neared 400,000 within a day.
