'Too woke to end a hookup': a September short follows Finlay Christie on tour
The stand-up bit sat quietly for almost four weeks, and now its comment section is arguing over what kind of joke it really is.
Why this story? The video is running at 66,302 views a day, 18 times its usual pace (3,606).
Too woke to end a hookup #standupcomedy
Finlay Christie posted "Too woke to end a hookup" on September 10. For most of the month it ticked along at a few thousand views a day. Then, with his autumn tour a week old, it suddenly picked up pace. The clip has now passed 130,000 views, and roughly half of all its comments arrived in a single day.
The timing has a neat coincidence. The tour opened on October 1 in Southend, and the date list in the short's own description puts him in Chelmsford, a few miles up the road in Essex, on the same day the clip took off. The description itself only teases the setting, wondering which country this could possibly have happened in.
The comments are where the life is. The most liked one calls the bit the reverse of edgy, offensive comedy, and another popular comment makes the same point more pointedly. That one has drawn a long string of replies. A third says the joke is not very relatable, and its reply thread is longer still. One viewer brings up Grice's maxims, a linguistics idea about how people cooperate in conversation. Another simply predicts the bit will be studied.
The channel as a whole is having an ordinary week. It has been a busy September for Christie all the same: a guide to UK slang, a day at the Fringe, and a reel of his best moments from Mock the Week. He calls that appearance a career highlight, and admits it was scary.
