Chris Bumstead gives hard work its due, not all the credit

His most-watched upload of the week puts genetics, mindset and a supportive environment into the success conversation.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

"No, I worked really hard. Harder than everyone? Probably not, but pretty close." Chris Bumstead's answer leaves room for something motivational clips often leave out: other people work hard, too.

In "The reality of the top 1%", he describes exceptional achievement as several things aligning, rather than effort doing all the work. Genetics and a supportive environment belong in that picture. His own particular focus, he says, was mindset: "that was the biggest thing I focused on."

The short interview clip was the most watched of his fourteen uploads this week, reaching roughly 214,000 views. Viewers picked up on the distinction between getting very good through practice and reaching the exceptional end of a field. Others described arriving for training tips and finding themselves thinking about life beyond the gym.

There was plenty of training alongside the reflection, including "The Best Bicep Circuit🤝", "Time to get massive triceps💪" and "My current training protocol". But the uploads gathering the most daily viewing right now include "If you want it, you'll do anything to achieve it." and "Underrated tip for success🤝", with "Hany set me straight😂🤷🏻‍♀️" close behind.

The channel added about 10,000 subscribers over the week, although daily viewing is running below its usual level. Among the fitness channels nearby, Squat University had the largest weekly viewing gain, while THENX and FitnessBlender were quieter. Bumstead's week combined the familiar arm-workout titles with a less straightforward answer to what makes someone exceptional.

  • When I started following CBUM, I thought I’d pick up a few training tips. I never expected him to be spitting top tier wisdom on life in his content.

  • He’s totally right. To be one of the best in any field, you need hard work and talent. That doesn’t mean you can’t get really good through hard work alone, but without that extra something it won’t make you one of the best.
