Why your brain feels different at 11pm, explained by a sleep scientist

Dr Vanessa Hill's two-week-old video leans on a study of nearly a million mental health observations, and on Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

No new uploads. BrainCraft spent the week living off a video from late September, and it is a very on-brand one: "Why your brain feels different at 11pm."

Dr Vanessa Hill, a sleep researcher whose work centers on bedtime procrastination, opens it with a confession about a midnight Pinterest habit, then reaches back more than a century to Hermann Ebbinghaus and his forgetting curve. The newer half rests on a 2024 BMJ Mental Health paper by Feifei Bu, Jessica Bone and Daisy Fancourt, which looked at time-of-day patterns in nearly a million observations of mood and wellbeing. She ends by asking viewers whether they have an evening self, and by digging up a video she made 12 years ago.

It has passed 25,000 views in two weeks and is drawing far more each day than anything else on the channel. Behind it, her white noise pair from the summer keeps a slow trickle going: a short asking whether white noise helps you sleep, and the longer "Are White Noise Machines a Scam?", which walks through a 2026 study on pink noise and earplugs.

Daily views are running a touch above their usual level, while the subscriber count held flat around 622,000. Among health channels of similar size it was a quieter stretch than most. Kati Morton and Kevin Jubbal both ran well ahead of their usual pace, and ADHD Love drew millions of views even in an off week. For a channel built on tired humans, a video about the late-night brain carrying a week without uploads feels about right.
