'Debunk slop' and a tall picture: Rohin Francis on talking health online
His one upload of the week is a frank worry about medical science communication, and the most liked comment is about its unusual shape.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Talking about health on the internet
On a usual day, Medlife Crisis draws a steady crowd to Dr Rohin Francis's back catalog of cardiology, science and self-deprecating jokes. This week looked much the same, with views running a touch above that usual pace, but the one new video was not a usual Medlife Crisis video.
"Talking about health on the internet" is Francis, a consultant cardiologist, admitting he doesn't know how to fix a problem in his own corner of the platform. The description says health information is stuck in a "debunk slop era": endless takedowns of nonsense, and too little that simply explains how the body works. It passed 70,000 views in five days, more than 40,000 of them in its first day.
The comments took the question seriously. Viewers from other fields say their worlds look the same, a biology teacher with creationism and an archaeology fan with pseudoarchaeology, while visitors from maths YouTube describe their corner as the friendly one. Several name ChubbyEmu as the kind of medical channel they want more of. One viewer liked his point about treating social apps as shopping apps. The most liked remark of all, though, is about the picture: the video comes in an unusually tall aspect ratio, and people with taller laptop screens are delighted.
The older videos are calmer. His beard-trimming Q&A for medical students, filmed with questions from Cambridge, UCL and a conference in Cluj-Napoca, still draws a few hundred views a day. Among health channels, Kati Morton and Kevin Jubbal are having busy weeks, while Jason Fung is a little quieter than usual.
