Video taking off 19x its usual first day

Kainalo wins at home in Maresias, live in Portuguese and English on the WSL

The World Surf League streamed the São Sebastião Pro finals day twice, and the Portuguese broadcast ran slightly ahead of the English one, on a day that also crowned a 17-year-old Australian.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 65,160 views a day, 19 times a normal first day on this channel (3,460).

The Banco do Brasil São Sebastião Pro ended with a Brazilian on the top step of a Brazilian podium, and the World Surf League put the whole finals day out twice: once as "🔴 AO VIVO" for viewers following in Portuguese, once as "🔴 WATCH LIVE" in English. Both went far past the channel's usual start. The Portuguese stream led, with about 80,000 views in its first 29 hours, and the English one was not far behind.

This was the Challenger Series, the tier below the Championship Tour where surfers chase a place among the elite, and the first time it had ever come to Maresias. Ryan Kainalo, "Brazil's own" in the league's words, started his day against Peru's Lucca Mesinas, the surfer the league calls 'The Machine'. He then posted an 8.50 against Oscar Berry in the semifinal and beat Australia's Alister Reginato in the final, sealing it with a 7.67 while he held priority. That final also has its own clip, a heat of a little over five minutes, and it has already drawn more views than any of the recaps posted after it.

The women's event went to a 17-year-old Australian who, by the league's own account, had never won a heat at this level before the week began. She went past Eweleiula Wong, then Israel's Anat Lelior, and then Portugal's Francisca Veselko, one of this year's Championship Tour rookies, with a 7.83 in the final.

The tour now moves to the EDP Ericeira Pro, October 6 to 12, where the league says the first Championship Tour qualifiers could be decided. For Veselko, the runner-up in Maresias, that next stop is on home water.
