Video surging 10x the video's usual pace

Who wears out first, wheel or road? Cole Trotta's September slide short

A month-old clip is busy again, and its comment section keeps turning the title's argument around: it is the road that grinds down the wheels.

Why this story? The video is running at 27,022 views a day, 10 times its usual pace (2,665).

Most sports channels of Cole Trotta's size are moving close to their usual pace right now. His is not. The downhill skater's channel is drawing about two-thirds more views a day than normal, and the video doing much of the pulling is not one of the new ones.

"The Wheels Don't Ruin The Road" went up on September 7 and settled into a quiet few thousand views a day. Now it is climbing again, and it has passed a quarter of a million views. It is a short of Trotta sliding down a stretch of road, the board swinging sideways and leaving pale streaks on the asphalt. The description says it was performed by professionals and should never be attempted.

The title reads like an answer to anyone who worries about those streaks, and the comments take it from there. The most liked one compares it to accusing pedestrians of wearing out the sidewalk, and another says it is like blaming a sleeper for ruining a bed. Others flip the line around: the road is doing the damage, they say, and the wheels are the ones paying for it. They have a point. Longboard wheels are made of urethane, and the white lines a slide leaves behind are the wheel itself, ground off a little at a time.

The old clip is busy again while Trotta is trying something longer. Late September brought "I Can't Believe They Destroyed This Road," which he describes as his return to long-form videos, with footage filmed from his own point of view and from a camera car. A steady run of new shorts has come alongside it, with titles about speed, single mistakes and the doubters who said he would never do it again.
