A gravel race, then an MTB marathon 15 hours later: Si's Girona double
This is the race Si's short, sharp interval training was built for, and the comments keep coming back to Dan's advice for the first climb and the moment Si called it a day.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 135,683 views a day, 13 times a normal first day on this channel (10,759).
I Raced Two Different UCI World Cup Races In 24 Hours - Can I Survive?
Si Richardson lined up in Girona for a 109-kilometer UCI Gravel World Series race. Fifteen hours later he was on the start line again, this time for an 88-kilometer cross-country marathon on the UCI mountain bike World Cup calendar. Both races ran at Sea Otter Europe, and GCN, the channel he has presented on for more than a decade, gave the weekend its own tongue-in-cheek name: the "GCN Sea Otter Europe Dirt Stage Race."
The video is the payoff to a plan we reported here a day earlier. Si had been preparing for a five-hour gravel race with brief, brutal VO2 max micro-intervals instead of long hours in the saddle. "I Raced Two Different UCI World Cup Races In 24 Hours - Can I Survive?" shows how that plan met the hills. It passed 120,000 views in its first 19 hours, far beyond a usual first day on the channel. The chapters follow the weekend in order, from the gravel start and a mid-race update to the second start and a section simply titled "Hard Times," and the description promises lessons in pacing and bike setup.
The comments have mostly settled on two moments. One is the advice from Dan Lloyd, the former pro and fellow presenter, to go full gas up the first climb. Plenty of viewers suspect he was thinking of the video more than the race. The other is the second day, which did not end at the finish line. Many viewers thank Si for showing the moment he stopped, and a good few in their sixties and seventies write that they still take on silly challenges themselves.
Around the race video, the channel kept posting short clips from Si's bikepacking trip through Slovenia, from Tolmin to Lake Bled.

Huge props to Dan for keeping a straight face whilst telling you that going full send up that first climb was the way to go.

A plain race diary from a long-time presenter, and its first day ran well past anything the channel usually sees from a new upload.
