What is a spotter? RAFA TV spends its week on racing's unseen voice
Three clips from In the Pits explain the person on the radio who calls the traffic a driver cannot see, and what a single tap can do.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
I Feel A Tap.
Spotters, three times over. RAFA TV, the channel that used to be WTF1, gave its whole week to the voice in a driver's ear: the person who watches the track from above and calls out traffic, cars alongside and gaps the driver cannot see from the seat.
The clips come from In the Pits. "Why You Really Need to Listen to Your Spotter." opened on Monday with the big question of trust between the two, and what happens when a bad call meets a driver who doesn't listen. "I Feel A Tap." followed a day later and narrowed it to one moment of door-to-door contact. On Thursday "What Is A Spotter?" went back to basics.
The tap is the one people are watching. At five days old it has passed 14,000 views and is still adding more than a thousand a day, while Monday's longer explainer has gone quiet after a good first day. The basics clip is picking up pace behind it, and the only comment of note under the tap asks a fair question: how do you tell a racing driver to slow down?
Taken together, the channel ran at about double its usual daily pace this week, with its subscriber count holding at a little over a million. Among motorsport and off-road channels of similar size it remains one of the quieter ones; ThoughTaken and 4WD 24-7 drew the big crowds, while Sky Sports F1 and Quadrant ran below their own usual pace.
For a channel whose about page calls sportscar racing home base, a week on spotters fits: in endurance and stock car racing, that voice on the radio is part of every lap.
