Fridge or counter? Reighar's 'The Egg Fridge Debate' reopens an old kitchen argument

Backyard chicken keepers, British shoppers and one food quality worker all weighed in, and a day later a $2000 budget short kept almost the same pace.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 734,789 views a day, 15 times a normal first day on this channel (48,466).

The Egg Fridge Debate 🥚The Egg Fridge Debate 🥚

A new short from Reighar usually ends its first day somewhere near 50,000 views. "The Egg Fridge Debate 🥚" went well past 700,000 in its first day, and a little more than a day after it went up it is closing in on a million.

The question is one that splits households across the Atlantic. In the United States, eggs sold in shops are washed before they reach the shelf, which strips away the thin natural coating on the shell known as the cuticle, or bloom, so they are kept cold from farm to fridge. In Britain and much of Europe, eggs usually go unwashed and sit on ordinary supermarket shelves. Going by the comments, that washing step is where the short puts its weight.

The comment section filled up about eleven times faster than on a usual Reighar first day, and it reads like a kitchen table that refuses to settle. The most liked replies make the same practical point: wherever you live, a cold egg keeps longer. One viewer offers a simple rule (chill it if the shop chilled it), backyard chicken keepers explain their own routines, and a long reply walks through why washing exists in the first place. Someone with hens wonders aloud how much fridge space they have wasted, another keeps eggs cold only so the summer heat will not hatch them, and a few people single out a spiral egg moment as the short's coolest trick.

Reighar, an animated storytelling channel voiced by @twistedpinttavern, did not stop at eggs. "The $2000 Budget Challenge 💀" went up the following day and ran at almost the same pace, while the week's other shorts wandered from Russia's secret nuclear city to a math lesson built around pizza. It is a channel with 160,000 subscribers whose short videos have now passed a billion views altogether.

What viewers say

  • my general rule is always that if the store refrigerates it, i refrigerate it. if the store doesn’t, i don’t (exception for if it says “refrigerate after opening,” then… i refrigerate after opening)
