'This family wins Halloween' brings Justin Flom 100,000 new subscribers in a day
The magician turned home-prank builder posted his Halloween short on Friday, and by Monday it had passed 13 million views while his other recent uploads sat in the hundreds of thousands.
Why this story? The channel is adding 100,030 subscribers a day, 15 times a normal day (6,563).
Justin Flom added about 100,000 subscribers in a single day, roughly fifteen times what his channel usually gains. That one day accounts for about half of everything the channel added over the past week.
The video at the center of it is short and seasonal. "This family wins Halloween. 🎃 👻" went up on Friday and has already passed 13 million views, far beyond anything else Flom posted in the days around it. His other recent uploads ask whether you would live in a completely pink house, wonder why a bathtub is sitting in a driveway, and offer a clip titled simply "That looks painful." Each of those is still counting in the hundreds of thousands. The Halloween one left them behind within days, and the whole channel's daily views nearly tripled along with it.
The title does not say what the family does to earn its win, and Flom does not explain it either. Whatever is in it, the timing fits: October is the month when a Halloween house gets watched, shared and copied. Was this the video that brought the newcomers in? It is the only upload of the week that ran this far ahead.
It also suits the channel. Flom started out as a magician, touring and tricking celebrities on television, and his about page now calls him a builder, a comedian, a father and only "sometimes" a magician. His best-known set is a house rigged with trap doors. A week ago, as we reported here, a video of a bad guy dropping through one of those floors outran everything else on the channel. A family going all out for Halloween is exactly the kind of staged spectacle that house was built for.
