A bike throw at the line: Remco Evenepoel pips Giulio Ciccone for the European title

The two had gone clear together, Evenepoel had crashed along the way, and the closing seconds of the race have drawn about twenty times the comments a TNT Sports Cycling short usually gets.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 326,894 views a day, 16 times a normal first day on this channel (19,957).

Evenepoel won it at the line. The short from TNT Sports Cycling shows the end of the elite men's road race at the European Championships, where the Belgian and Giulio Ciccone came to the finish together and the title went to whoever got his wheel there first. In thirteen hours it passed 234,000 views, far beyond the channel's usual start.

The finish was only the last twist of the afternoon. Another short from the same race shows Evenepoel crashing after he and the Italian had attacked off the front, and a third covers the final kilometers under the title "SIMPLY UNSTOPPABLE!" Both ran well ahead of the usual too. So did the closing kilometers of the Coppa Agostoni, posted the same day, though the Europeans finale drew the most viewers by a distance.

The comment section is busy, about twenty times busier than on a usual short's first day, and it keeps returning to two moments. One is the bike throw, which many viewers say was timed exactly right while Ciccone's came a fraction late. The other is the last corner: several think Ciccone tricked Evenepoel into a poor line by taking the inside, and a few reach for Formula 1 to describe it. One viewer adds that Evenepoel had even given the others a head start by falling off.

Evenepoel has had big days before. He is the 2022 world road race champion and won both the road race and the time trial at the Paris Olympics. In a separate interview on the channel, he says how relieved he was to win after what he calls a tough week.
