Video taking off 17x its usual first day

Ten GCN riders, one early puncture and a 50 km/h hour in Girona

The channel's whole presenting lineup tried to hold Tour de France pace for sixty minutes, and the comments are already asking for a rematch.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 186,251 views a day, 17 times a normal first day on this channel (10,759).

Can We Ride 50KM In Just One Hour?!Can We Ride 50KM In Just One Hour?!

Can a group of cycling presenters hold Tour de France pace for a full hour? Global Cycling Network took the question to Girona, put ten riders in aero kit, linked them by Sena radios and sent them down a flat out-and-back course with a single target: 50 kilometers in 60 minutes.

The idea comes from the pros. The description notes that Tour stages now average more than 50 km/h, a speed that sounds abstract until you try to sit on it. The chapters tell how the attempt went: a team briefing, the start, then "Disaster Strikes: Early Puncture!" not ten minutes in, a hard return leg after the turnaround, and riders falling off the back of the paceline in the final push. Afterward, GCN asks its viewers whether the team could have cracked it without that early flat.

The video passed 168,000 views in its first 19 hours. A new GCN video usually reaches about 11,000 in a full day. A short cut posted under the same title also ran well ahead of the usual, though far behind the full version.

In the comments, the talk is about the lineup. Viewers enjoy seeing presenters from all of GCN's countries on one road, and they single out riders: Dan Lloyd back at speed, Séverine taking her turns at the front beside much heavier teammates, Si in strong form. One viewer says Dan's calm calls on the radio sound like Charlie Wegelius directing EF's riders. The most common request is a sequel: make it a yearly attempt at a GCN speed record, bring in the triathlon sister channel GTN, or hand the course to a pro team and see how fast they go.

Only two days earlier, the same Catalan roads belonged to Si Richardson alone and his gravel-then-MTB double, as we reported here. This time the whole roster rode them together.

What viewers say

  • This should become a yearly tradition, try to break the GCN speed record. Maybe even get GTN in on the team
  • Dan’s calls on the team radio are so nice and controlled - very reminiscent of hearing Charlie Wegelius on the EF races.

  • I like these vids of yours that flex the "global network" part of GCN.
