Hats on fire, and a comment section defending Feast with Wei from the AI label

His only new short of the week drew close to 50,000 views in its first day, and the most liked replies insist every flame in it was real.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

One upload, one fire. Feast with Wei, the channel whose about page promises nothing more than "a glimpse into my gluttonous mind," posted a single short in seven days, "cooked so hard our hats caught fire 😮‍💨," and the title is close to a full plot summary: chef's hats, a stove turned up too far, and flames where the toques should be.

What viewers wanted to talk about was not the cooking. The most liked comments are about AI, or rather its absence. Plenty of people seem to have wondered whether the burning hats were generated, and the regulars answer that Wei's work is practical effects and editing, and that he tends to show how a shot was made. One sharp-eyed viewer did point out that flames do not cast shadows, before conceding that the editing looks cool anyway.

The short is not what is carrying the channel, though. That job belongs to "Let us cook 🧑‍🍳👨‍🍳," ten days old and past half a million views, still pulling in more each day than anything else. Behind it, the pepper-seed stunt from three weeks ago, already past eight million, keeps adding views of its own.

Together they kept the channel running a little ahead of its usual pace, and about 9,000 new subscribers arrived over the week. Among cooking channels of a similar size, Feast with Wei sits fourth, both by subscribers and by views added. Alpine Butcher and Eating With Tod had the biggest weeks in the group, while Tiny Food and Sarah's Vegan Kitchen moved more quietly.
