A Frankenstein from one scrap block, cut on Nick Engler's band saw
The little monster is one of six Halloween Elves, and the comments under it are still settling whether Frankenstein is the doctor or the creature.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Scrap wood Frankenstein
On a usual day Workshop Companion draws a little over 100,000 views. Right now it is closer to 60,000, and the week rested on a single short that only went up on Friday.
That short is "Scrap wood Frankenstein," and it is pure seasonal fun from a channel better known for sharpening and joinery. Nick Engler, the craftsman and author of more than fifty woodworking books who runs the channel with producer Travis Blair, cuts a pint-size Frank from one block of scrap. He is one of six monsters and spooks in what the description calls the "Halloween Elves" collection. The trick is the band saw: cutting the block from two sides leaves a three-dimensional figure that looks carved. It passed 40,000 views in its first day.
The comment section turned literary. The most liked reply is the old correction about who is actually named Frankenstein, and others answer that the doctor was the real monster. Some viewers think Frank looks a bit like a Minecraft villager. Several call Nick the Bob Ross of woodworking.
The older lessons keep their quiet pace. A spring video on hiding screws with wooden plugs is closing in on two million views, and a summer one on stropping is past three million.
The channel added about 10,000 subscribers over the seven days. Among the DIY and home channels nearest its size, it had the second most views of the week, though BAS Renovations had an enormous one.
