Balloon frames, timber frames and cut nails: BAS Renovations goes back in time

A single short weighing old framing methods against new passed five million views in three days, and a former firefighter in the comments backs up its warning about balloon frames.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

One short, five million views. BAS Renovations, the Michigan builder whose channel motto is "Learn it-Build it," posted just one video this week, and it turned the workshop into a history lesson: "Was old framing better than New?" sets timber framing, balloon framing and today's methods side by side in full-size models, weighs the pros and cons of each, then pulls them all down.

It took off fast, with about two and a half million views on its first day. The comment section is a chorus of people marveling that so much fits into two minutes, and one sharp-eyed viewer noticed that the balloon-frame model was even built with cut nails, the kind of period detail most builders would skip. The fire point drew the most personal replies: balloon frames, with studs running uninterrupted from foundation to roof, let flames climb from bottom to top, and a viewer who has fought fires in such houses confirms it. Another remembers an 1800s timber-frame family home that stood through a tornado.

The older shorts are still working too. The American-versus-European building comparison from August has passed 32 million views, and a two-week-old short on how a patio roof fails keeps moving. Together they pushed the channel to more than double its usual daily views, about 11 million over the week, the most among the DIY and home channels nearest its size, where most of the others had a calmer stretch. Around 30,000 new subscribers came along with them.
