Video taking off 83x its usual first day

Two goals in two minutes and a pushed linesman: Saudi Arabia's Gulf Cup final

SBS Sport's ten-minute highlights of the Green Falcons' home win over the UAE drew a crowd from well beyond Australia, with comments in Arabic, Indonesian and English.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 90,256 views a day, 83 times a normal first day on this channel (1,085).

Who watches an Australian broadcaster's highlights of a final played in Saudi Arabia? Going by the comment section, a good part of the Arab world and a lively group from Indonesia. SBS Sport's extended highlights of the Arabian Gulf Cup final passed 35,000 views within six hours, a pace headed toward 90,000 for its first day. A regular video here usually opens with about a thousand.

The match gave the editors plenty to cut. Saudi Arabia, the Green Falcons, scored twice in two minutes to go 2-0 up early against the United Arab Emirates and went on to lift the trophy on home soil. Then it turned messy. SBS's own short clips from the same night show a VAR check that came almost three minutes after the incident, just as the UAE's Nicolas Gimenez was about to take a penalty, and a red card for a UAE substitute who pushed the linesman while bottles rained down from the stands. Those clips stayed in the low thousands. The full ten minutes is where people went.

The comments arrived faster too: more in six hours than a usual video here collects in its first day several times over. Congratulations come from Algeria and Oman as well as from Saudi supporters. Indonesian viewers debate whether the VAR call in the box was right while agreeing the midfield handball was clear, and one asks whether this is a FIFA event or a regional one. It is regional, the Gulf nations' own tournament. Another thread compares the two squads and praises the Saudi side for fielding only homegrown players.

For a channel whose description leans on the World Cup and cycling's grand tours, this was a night when a Gulf rivalry on the pitch brought in an audience from far beyond its Australian schedule.
