Video taking off 33x its usual first day

A Czech defender's striker-like finish and two for Kane on beIN's England reel

Viewers grumble about how much of the half-time walk-off made the cut, but the England v Czechia highlights still drew a full day's worth of comments in seven hours.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 192,728 views a day, 33 times a normal first day on this channel (5,898).

Can a highlights reel spend too long on the half-time whistle? Plenty of people watching beIN SPORTS Australia's England v Czechia package think so, and they kept watching anyway. It passed 80,000 views within seven hours of going up, on a channel where a new video usually ends its whole first day with around six thousand.

The play itself is what the comment section keeps replaying. Harry Kane's name is all over the tags, and viewers credit him with two goals and, in pointed quotation marks, an "assist". The joke is about the Czech defender whose finish into his own net looked so clean that several people say he could play up front. Others keep going back to a long pass from Anderson for the second goal, and a few welcome Trent Alexander-Arnold back into the side.

The editing gets its own thread. Commenters point to twenty-odd seconds of players walking off at half time and a referee chatting with a player, and one says he misses the highlights another broadcaster used to post. Even so, the comments in those first seven hours already matched what a usual video here collects in a full day.

It was not the channel's only quick start. "Croatia v Spain | UEFA Nations League | Match Highlights", tagged with Lamine Yamal, Mikel Merino and Ivan Perišić, came close behind. Meanwhile the channel's Messi farewell clips from Argentina's 3-0 win over Benin, in his last game in the national shirt, are only starting out. The anthem leads them so far, the clip the channel says left barely a dry eye in the house.
