A seatbelt hammock and a thigh master: Red Green's 'Peak Laziness' finds its crowd

The Possum Lodge clip passed 300,000 views in a week, while the channel also announced a free app carrying all 300-plus episodes.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

On an ordinary day, the official home of The Red Green Show draws around 100,000 views across its long catalog of Possum Lodge episodes. Right now it is running at more than twice that, and one clip is doing most of the lifting.

"Peak Laziness" opened gently, with about 11,000 views on its first day. Then it took off, and a week later it has passed 300,000. The description says Red didn't invent laziness, he just gave it a whole toolkit. In the comments, viewers mostly refuse the premise: they call it thrift and ingenuity rather than laziness. Several admit they took his hammock for duct tape until they spotted the seatbelt buckles. Others say how much they miss seeing Red on public television.

That Red is Steve Smith, the Canadian comedian who created and played him for fifteen seasons, and the week's other uploads lean on the show's oldest habits. Two clips feature the Possum Lodge Word Game, one with Dougie from season six, and a Handyman Corner roundup gathers five duct tape builds from seasons three through seven. A September clip with Edgar, played by Graham Greene, mixing up mouthwash and nitroglycerin is still drawing a steady crowd too.

There was news as well. The channel introduced Red Green TV, a free app that it says carries all 300-plus episodes alongside the Possum Lodge Podcast.

Among TV channels of a similar size, Law & Order and ABC Australia drew the biggest audiences, while Turner Classic Movies also ran well above its usual pace. RedGreenTV landed in the middle of that group on views, but none of those channels had a hammock made from seatbelts.

What viewers say

  • This isn't lazy. This is being thrifty. A lazy person would simply never have done any of this and the only chirping they would hear won't be the bird. It will be that smoke detector.
  • Okay, I'll admit, I was sure that was a duct tape hammock. I didn't notice the buckles at first
  • This was a great show. We all miss Red Green. 😊
