Elliott Smith, in one question, from Nikola Gugoski
The only upload of the seven days asks "How good was Elliott Smith?", and its comments turned into a list of favorite songs.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
How good was Elliott Smith?
On an ordinary day, Nikola Gugoski's catalog of riffs and song lessons draws around 125,000 views, and that is about what it drew this week too. The channel's about page promises to help people learn their favorite songs, and most of the traffic comes from videos that do exactly that.
The one new upload went a different way. "How good was Elliott Smith?" puts a single question to the Portland songwriter behind Either/Or and XO, the man whose songs filled the Good Will Hunting soundtrack and earned him an Oscar nomination for "Miss Misery." It is a modest video by this channel's standards, close to 17,000 views, but its comment section is busy. Viewers trade titles back and forth, "Pitseleh," "Between the Bars," "Independence Day," "Kiwi Maddog," while others argue that his guitar playing gets less credit than his writing. A few simply want to know which song he is playing, and one guitarist spots an open tuning that reminds him of a Radiohead track.
The real work is being done by older lessons. A 45-day-old list of riffs that mark the jump from beginner to intermediate, built around barre chords, muting and palm muting, is the channel's busiest video each day. Behind it come a two-week-old clip of John Frusciante's "Wet Sand" solo from Pinkpop 2006 and a King Crimson riff from "Frame by Frame" that, by the title's own account, gave Nikola a headache.
Among music lesson channels near his size, he sits third both in subscribers and in views added over the seven days. Andrew Piano is having the big week in that company, while Steve Stine and Scott Paul Johnson are both running well above their usual pace.
