Teacher shortages and crumbling schools: France's student protests turn violent
NBC News' short report from France drew far more viewers than the channel's usual uploads, on a day it also carried protest camps over housing in Madrid.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 580,535 views a day, 41 times a normal first day on this channel (14,084).
Thousands arrested as student protests escalate into violence
The protests began last month in the Paris region over complaints most parents would recognize: too few teachers and school buildings in poor repair. According to the NBC News report, they have since spread across the country and grown violent, with dozens injured and police making thousands of arrests.
It was a short clip, and it went much further than the channel's usual new video. Within twelve hours it had passed 396,000 views, when an NBC News upload typically ends its whole first day somewhere near 14,000. It also left the rest of the weekend's uploads well behind, including Raf Sanchez's report on the Flydubai cockpit attack and the Coast Guard search for a missing medical jet.
Europe supplied the channel's other strong start of the day as well. A report on protesters camped out in Madrid, posted after Spain's parliament rejected the government's latest attempt to tackle soaring housing costs, also ran well above usual, though at roughly a third of the French report's pace.
Both arrived during a slower stretch for NBC News as a whole, which is drawing well below its usual daily views. Fox News, MS NOW and Sky News are in a similar dip, while Vox is running slightly above its usual.
The French report's comment section filled fast, with close to six hundred comments in its first half day. Much of it is about the coverage itself: many viewers ask why the signs in the footage are blurred, and several want to know more about what the report shows of the violence.
