A Hialeah animal cruelty charge leads NBC 6's Friday, ahead of a botched execution report
No famous name this time: a short on a local dog cruelty case outpaced the station's coverage of Christa Pike and a 69-car pileup.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 128,243 views a day, 15 times a normal first day on this channel (8,325).
Woman charged with animal cruelty after videos show dog abused, cops say
No celebrity this time. After two days led by famous defendants, Antonio Brown leaving a Miami court and then Rick Ross, as we reported here, NBC 6 South Florida's biggest new video is about a woman nobody had heard of and a small dog.
"Woman charged with animal cruelty after videos show dog abused, cops say" reports on an arrest in Hialeah. According to the station's description, a 42-year-old woman was booked into jail early Friday on three counts of animal cruelty. The surveillance footage police released shows her outside a building with three small dogs, two in a stroller and one on a leash. At one point the leashed dog slips free and runs down the sidewalk before she catches it.
The short passed 60,000 views in its first eight hours, many times what a new upload usually gets here in a full day. Comments came in about five times faster than on a usual first day for the station's shorts. Many commenters point out that the clip cuts away before the abuse itself, and a few thank the station for that. Much of the rest is about her bond, and whether the courts treat harm to animals more strictly than harm to people.
Friday was crowded for the newsroom. A witness's account of Christa Pike's botched execution and chopper footage of a 69-car pileup on an I-95 bridge in South Carolina, where no one died, both drew far more than usual. Together they lifted the channel's daily views to more than four times their normal level.
