A Franklin High family says their son was being bullied before he died
ABC7's report from a vigil in Highland Park reached far more people in its first hours than the station's videos usually do in a whole day.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 298,525 views a day, 13 times a normal first day on this channel (22,453).
Family says student who fell to his death at school was being bullied
A 17-year-old student died after a fall at Franklin High School in Highland Park, in northeast Los Angeles. At a vigil for him, his family told ABC7's Eyewitness News that he had been bullied, and they spoke about how he was treated in the days before his death.
The relatives asked not to be shown on camera, and the short report respects that. Their account is the heart of it: a family grieving in public and asking questions about what happened to him at school.
The video had passed 164,000 views nine hours after it went up. A new upload on ABC7 usually finishes its entire first day at around 22,000. Hundreds of comments arrived in those first hours. Many ask how bullying can go on at a school without anyone stepping in, and many others are simply condolences for the family.
For a station that covers all of Southern California, this was a story from its own city, and it is the one people chose to watch.
