'I can make this worse': Nathan Doan's unhelpful friend passes two million in a day
An alarm set to PM, a doomed vase and a therapist who needs a therapist of his own: the comments trace the friend's handiwork scene by scene.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 2,124,934 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (183,668).
POV: Your friend sees you struggling and says, “I can make this worse” #skit #relatable #funny
Two million views in about a day, for a short about one man's bad morning and the friend who makes it worse. Nathan Doan posted "POV: Your friend sees you struggling and says, 'I can make this worse'" on October 2. It passed a million well before its first day was out. A new short of his usually ends that first day somewhere under 200,000.
The premise is all in the title. One character is having a terrible day, and the friend who turns up offers escalation instead of comfort. From what viewers keep repeating, the details pile up quickly: an alarm set to PM instead of AM, a favorite vase that does not survive, and a morning that did not even begin in bed. The joke quoted most in the comments is the one about a day so bad it sent his therapist to therapy, and some viewers have started counting therapists from there. Others think the friend is a secret assassin, or that the man on the receiving end has earned a villain arc. The comments came in about three and a half times faster than on a usual first day.
It was not the only Nathan Doan short to cross a million that day. "The Incompetent employee FINALLY gets chewed out...," a restaurant skit from October 1, got there too. A gaming skit about buying a new skin to play better is past 800,000. The channel added about 70,000 subscribers over the week, and its daily views are running well above usual. Michael Storen, a sketch channel of about the same size, is having a busy stretch as well.
As we reported here, a week ago the story was an older biohazard-snack skit that was still drawing more views than his new uploads. This time the newest short got there on its own, and at least one viewer is already asking for a feature-length version.
