Killed after his bond was paid: David Wright's family wants answers from the DeKalb County Jail
FOX 5 Atlanta's short report on the 24-year-old's death reached far more people in six hours than the station's shorts usually do in a whole day.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 97,355 views a day, 24 times a normal first day on this channel (4,108).
DeKalb County inmate killed after bond paid | FOX 5 News
The family of David Wright, 24, wants an official investigation into how the DeKalb County Jail is run. Their attorneys say six inmates beat him to death one day after his arrest, after his bond had already been paid. FOX 5 Atlanta told the story in a short report titled "DeKalb County inmate killed after bond paid," and it travelled quickly: close to 40,000 views within six hours, when a short on the station usually finishes its first day with around 4,000.
The station's keywords for the report point to the questions around the case: jail security checks, broken locks, how long medical help took to arrive, and the surveillance video the family wants to see.
The comment section moved even faster than the views. In those first hours it drew hundreds of replies, against the dozen or so a short usually gets in a full day. Many viewers ask how something like this could happen inside a jail. Others ask whether he knew the men who attacked him, and one of the busiest threads keeps asking why he was in custody at all, a question the report does not answer. Messages of condolence to his family run all through it.
It was not the only story the Atlanta station carried that day. Its live coverage of Braves fans at Truist Park, sending the team off to Los Angeles for the NLDS, included the DeKalb family's demand for answers among its headlines. On the station's channel, though, the short jail report is the one people came to.
