Attorney claims slain NYT Engineer was 'volatile' as elderly in-laws face murder charges
Jonathan McKinsey, an engineer at The New York Times, was shot and killed at a crowded park in Dublin, in the East Bay. His elderly in-laws now face murder charges. KTVU FOX 2's newest short on the case follows the defense: the attorney for McKinsey's 77-year-old mother-in-law is seeking her release from jail, and the title carries the attorney's word for the man who died, 'volatile.'
The station has followed the case from the start. As we reported here, its report on the arrests already had a standout start. This follow-up went much further, reaching close to 280,000 views in its first day. For a short from KTVU, that is roughly thirty times the usual.
The comments came in about twelve times faster than on a typical first day. Much of the discussion turns on the defense's account of McKinsey and on what it could mean for the charges. Other viewers pick up on smaller moments in the clip, such as a husband helping his wife with an earpiece, and ask what they have to do with the case.
It was not the station's only grim story of the day. A report from the Berkeley Hills also ran well ahead of a normal start. A 61-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman, believed to have been married, were found shot to death in their home on Panoramic Way. Both stories come from the East Bay, the stretch of the station's own coverage area between Oakland and San Jose.
