Rick Ross's first court appearance leads a day of four Ross reports on NBC 6
The station followed the rapper from a Miami-Dade bond hearing to a jailhouse statement to a helicopter shot of his Star Island home, and the hearing drew the most viewers by far.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 144,947 views a day, 18 times a normal first day on this channel (8,102).
Rick Ross faces judge after arrest in Florida
NBC 6 South Florida covered the arrest of Rick Ross from several angles in a single day, and its viewers followed each one. The busiest was the shortest step in the story: Ross, whose legal name is William Leonard Roberts II, appearing before a judge. Twelve hours after it went up, that clip had passed 100,000 views. A new short on the channel usually opens to around 8,000 in a full day.
According to the station's report, Ross was booked into Miami-Dade's Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Thursday morning on charges of battery and battery by strangulation, both listed as involving domestic violence. The arrest report places the incident at his Star Island home in late August. It was reported to police this week. Outside the jail, Ross told reporters he is totally innocent and called the allegations fabricated. His arraignment is set for October 22.
Three more videos of that statement, of his release, and of Chopper6's view of him outside his home each ran far ahead of a usual first day. So did the station's report on Christa Pike's failed execution in Tennessee. Together they pushed the channel's daily views to more than three times their usual level, the highest pace among the local news channels nearest its size.
The comments arrived even faster than the views, more than ten times a usual short's full first day in just twelve hours. Much of the talk circles one exchange in the hearing, when the defense raised Ross's fame and the judge answered it.
